What's a leg worth anyway?

It has been an eventful few weeks for the crew here in Richmond. Here goes. Ever since moving into our new home we’ve been scraping along, spending pretty much every penny that Jarom has made at his new job. Jarom isn’t too worried about this, as much of that money went to things like crown molding and refrigerators and sinks, which are big ticket items that are now out of the way. But Lix was concerned, and after some inspiration from her good friend Mandy Jo, she decided to begin her career as a couponer. So we got a subscription to the Sunday edition of the local newspaper, which Alixa faithfully trims up, putting the applicable coupons in a nerdy binder that is sorted by product and store and would make Monica proud. Jarom isn’t complaining though, because in her first few trips, buying the things that she normally buys, Lix has saved between 30-50% on each trip. She still has to figure out some of the tricks, but she likes it and enjoys spending less money at the grocery store.

After smoking some weed, Jenna got the munchies and made a huge mess

But that is only half of the money equation. Calling on her inner workaholic, Alixa has recruited Kenzie to be a business partner and the two of them have reserved a booth at an upcoming craft fair where they will sell all manner of homemade things for babies. Lix has been running her sewing machine seamingly non-stop as she makes quilts and carseat canopies. She is also making hair clips and hats and blankets. Last week the battery and alternator in the Camry died, costing a pretty penny and prompting Jarom to bring up the possibility of getting a new car. He told Alixa that all of the money she earns through this little venture can go straight towards a new car for her, and I think she is even more motivated than before.

Jarom has had some ups and downs healthwise recently. A few weeks ago Jarom and Lix dropped Jenna off at Kenna’s house for a few hours to go play a round of golf together. Alixa came out on fire, and was leading by 7 points after 12 holes. Then she got tired and the wheels began to come off. Her lead was down to 2 with 3 holes to go when she conveniently used the old “we should go pick up our daughter” line. So she left, claiming victory as she headed home. Jarom stuck around to finish, but began to feel a little off as he finished up his round. I’m not sure if it was the fact that it was about 100 degrees or the frustration of not being able to beat his wife for the second straight time or perhaps a combination of the two, but he was not feeling well. He made it most of the way home before he had to pull over to provide some natural fertilizer for some roadside grass. He became sick a few more times that evening and ended up staying home from work the next day.

About a week later an even more serious event occurred. Jarom came home from basketball late at night and found a box of unwanted glass frames sitting on the front porch waiting to be thrown away. He grabbed the box and began to carry it to the trash can. Unfortunately it had rained earlier in the day and the cardboard had become weak and soggy, and it collapsed under the weight of the frames after a few steps, dropping glass all over Jarom’s right leg, opening a gash and causing him to bleed on his all white basketball shoes. He cleaned up the mess and headed inside for the shower. It hurt and was bleeding quite a bit, but he couldn’t really see it well because of where it was on his leg, so he woke up Alixa to get her opinion as to whether or not it might need stitches. The consensus was that it did in fact need stitches, but at the late hour that meant a trip to the ER and a $100 copay. So they called the mission president’s wife to ask her if she thought it would matter if they waited until the morning. She said that it would be fine, so they wrapped it up and went to sleep. First thing the next morning Jarom headed off to the Urgent Care facility (home of the $30 copay) to get it taken care of. The first question the doctor asked when he heard Jarom say he thought he needed stitches was “when did you cut yourself?” Jarom’s answer was followed by a sigh and this little gem from the MD: “You do know that stitches have to be done within 4-6 hours of an injury, right?” Of course he knew that, which is why he came in to get stitches 10 hours later. What a silly doctor. After checking it out, the doc decided to throw a few stitches in there to hold it closed and hope that it doesn’t get infected [the reason that stitches must be put in quickly is because the risk of infection spikes if you sew a wound after it has begun to heal.] It has been a week, and the prognosis is pretty good. It did not get infected, and Jarom gets to have a huge scar on his leg and $70 more dollars in his bank account, so I think everybody’s a winner.

This past weekend I got left to hold down the fort while everyone went up to Delaware for an extended weekend. Jamie wanted some help from Alixa making some baby blankets for her soon-to-be-new boy, and Jenna wanted to swim in the pool, and Jarom wanted to go golfing with JD and Jesse. Jenna learned to swim using water wings, and was perhaps a little too fearless, jumping off the diving board to her dad and off the side of the pool to her mom, or to nobody. She enjoyed playing with the other kids, even though sometimes she got a little overwhelmed. She is particularly fond of her older cousins Adri and Alli, and will happily chase them or run away from them for hours. The dads liked comparing their children, with Jarom wishing his kid was better at climbing on stuff and Jason wishing his kid was better and communicating and doing silly tricks. You know, the grass is always greener over there. Mostly they just enjoyed the company, and spent a lot of time sitting around chatting. They did force Annie to take some family photos on Monday before they took off, and even though Jarom and Alixa aren’t much to look at, they got some pretty good ones of little Jenna (they are the new ones on the sidebar.) It was a little odd going up to Gramma’s house and not seeing Gramma, but the new tenants were wonderfully hospitable so they’ll probably go back again sometime.

She's talking a blue streak now, Jack!

Most people know the exchange rate of dog years to people years(about seven), but very few people know how to convert to ball python years(about three) or how to convert one-year-old years(about 50). Recently Alixa stole Jenna from her daddy to go galavanting across the western United States for two weeks. You might think that two weeks is no big deal, and in Alixa’s case you would be correct. She came back pretty much the same person she left as, only now she has a new, loudly decorated piece of luggage thanks to some less-than-tender handling of her old suitcase on the way out. Jenna, however, returned as a very different little person. The most noticeable difference is in how much she is now jabbering. When she left she was just starting to babble a little and could do a few animal noises. She now talks or sings almost non-stop, and some of it is beginning to be coherent, which is pretty fun. She can say mama, dada, kenna, and Jesus, opa, and gramma, and understands who those people are. She can identify other people who weren’t considerate enough to have simpler names (I’m looking at you McKenzie.) Her repertoire of animal noises has also increased to include cow, duck, snake, fish, dog, elephant, and giraffe. She has also decided of her own accord what sound a mouse makes. Apparently they scrunch up their nose and breathe really hard. I’m not sure when she has ever seen a mouse do this, but it is fairly hilarious. She also learned where all sorts of body parts are, and will happily poke you in the eye just to prove that she knows where it is. Her favorite thing to show off is her tongue, which she will regularly stick out and wiggle just because she enjoys it.

Things have been pretty busy around here since the girls got back. The moratorium on Alixa’s home improvements expired, and her first project was to redo the master bathroom. This involved changing the light fixture, painting the walls and the vanity, and installing a new medicine cabinet. The results are fabulous. Next she made some curtains for the windows in the family room, and they also look great.

Before
and after

Jarom is just happy to have his girls back. It turns out he isn’t very good at being single. He loves playing with Jenna, which gets more and more interactive every day. She is very aware of her surroundings and does a great job following directions. You can send her to get a diaper, or tell her to go upstairs and she will do it. She is also good at sensing others’ moods. The other day Lix was being a little bit whiny so Jarom asked Jenna “where’s daddy’s grumpy wife?” She quickly pointed straight at her mom. Such a smart girl. She also loves to play games, and will chase mom or dad around the house until the turn and charge her, at which point she will run away from them and try to find a chair or something to hide behind. Her other favorite game is to give fake kisses. She will lean in and almost give you a kiss and then turn her face away and laugh and laugh. She will do this over and over until your self esteem has been completely exhausted.

Such pretty ladies

We’ve also been doing a lot of dancing lately, and Jenna has made some pretty serious advancements. Until recently, Jenna’s dancing consisted of a simple squat move where she bounced her butt to the beat. Her dancing recently evolved from an up and down theme to a twirling theme. This began with an elbow throwing motion, akin to Dwight Howard after grabbing a rebound. It has progressed into a full body spin, which is occasionally accompanied by one or both hands being raised above her head. This is very cute to watch, especially because she will do it until she gets dizzy and will then fall over sideways while giggling. I’ve included some videos below to get an idea, but we have so far been unable to capture anything on film that truly demonstrates the hilariousness of it all.

This first one includes a train that used to be Jarom's. Jenna loves pulling it around the house.

This film was directed and produced by Nate while he and Jarom were babysitting the rats. It's short, but funny.

Playing Catchup

Mitch asked if I could write a short summary of Jenna’s and my two weeks away and while a two week summary isn’t very short, here it goes!

Jenna and I up and left Jarom on July 15 to go to Utah to see some old friends, grand parents, my new niece, and my parents. It was a fun filled, very busy trip. Thankfully, Jenna is such a seasoned flier that she was well behaved on all of the flights. She even managed to sleep a little bit which was great for her. Not so great for me. Anyone who has ever flown with a child on their lap knows that it is impossible to do anything other than hold the child. Even when they are asleep. You can’t move or read or anything because they are crushing your arms and making them fall asleep. So the first flight, Jenna had her own seat and we were in a bulk head seat so she had plenty of room to sit and walk around so it wasn’t so bad. Unfortunately, that flight was only an hour long. The second flight was three and a half hours long. Jenna had to sit on my lap and I tried to keep her occupied. She slept for about an hour and I stared at the seat in front of me. Most boring thing ever. We sat next to some really nice Japanese people who didn’t speak a lick of English, but Jenna and them managed to become best friends and they played the last hour of that flight. It was really nice of them.

Jenna learned how to avoid saying prayers at Nate's house

We finally arrived in SLC and were greeted by Gramma Nancy. It was fantastic to see her and Jenna even remembered who she was and sat with her while I got my luggage. Once we got everything loaded in the car, we drove all around Salt Lake looking for a Mr. Mac store where Grandpa Bruce had dropped some pants off at to get altered. We went to the wrong one and then ended up having to drive 30 minutes to the right one. It was awesome. Then we made a very important stop at CafĂ© Rio where I was able to indulge a craving I have had since I left Utah. Nothing is better than their pork salad. So good. After a few more stops, we finally made it home where Jenna and I crashed pretty early. The next day we were able to go on a walk with one of my old roommates who lives like half a mile from my in laws new house. It was so fun to see her. The rest of that week was spent seeing friends and family, going out to eat, and shopping. Three of my favorite things! I was able to go to roommate dinner with four of my six old college roommates. We are all married with kids now so it was completely different and so much fun to see everyone. After that we went over to my Aunt’s house who lives in Cedar Hills and hung out with her and her family for a few hours.

Sunday we went to my in-law’s new ward. My father-in-law is the new mission president of the Salt Lake City mission, which is why they are now in Utah, instead of Delaware. Anyway, President Monson is in their home ward and was apparently in attendance the week before. I was so bummed I missed him! But they have a nice ward and Jenna enjoyed playing with Gramma. That night we went to the Soulier’s house for dinner. They are old friends of Jarom’s family who used to live in Delaware. The food was delicious and Jenna was so good. She kept her self occupied by pulling all of their books off the shelf and leafing through all of their novels. She is so advanced. Another special treat, President Hinckley’s son was in attendance at that dinner and I got to sit by him. It was awesome. He is super nice and funny and sounds just like our late prophet. A little eerie, but still super cool.

Yay for shoes!

Boo for bonnets!

Monday was really low key because Jenna and I needed to catch up on some sleep and laundry and I don’t really remember what we did on Tuesday, but I am sure it was super fun. Oh, Tuesday night, I did go to a couponing class at my friend Amanda’s house. I am hooked! I haven’t actually started couponing yet because I just subscribed to the magazine, but I am so excited to save so much money! So, send all unwanted coupons my way, please. I will keep you posted on my success (or lack there of!).

Jenna went from uninterested in baby Eva to very upset with baby Eva

Wednesday morning Jenna and I packed everything up to drive up to Rexburg, Idaho. The Winns were nice enough to let me borrow a car for the week so we could drive up and see my new niece, Eva Rose, and also my brother graduated from BYU Idaho. My parents had flown in for the special occasion also, so it was one big party. My sister in law was nice enough to have her baby the day before we arrived so we drove to the hospital first to see them. Baby Eva is super cute and we made Jenna and her matching cousin bracelets. Jenna loves hers and brings it to me to put on every day. That night we stayed with my parents in their hotel room. It was absolutely terrible. My parents snore like you wouldn’t believe. Jenna couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t sleep and we both cried a lot that night. I considered throwing in the towel and driving home the next day because neither of us could sleep, but I found better sleeping arrangements at my brother’s house. We were able to stay in his extra bedroom and with a box fan going, we couldn’t hear the new baby cry and night and they couldn’t hear Jenna moving around and it worked out perfectly. We were able to spend the rest of the week golfing and shopping and eating and hanging out. I love spending time with my family and always have so much fun.

Jenna thought her second cousin Olivia was hirarious

Sadly the week had to end and on Sunday night we packed up yet again and drove back to Salt Lake. Jenna slept for about half of it and then I gave her a pen and a coloring book for the last part. When we arrived in SLC, she had pen all over herself. Hardly a mark on the paper. I guess that is what I get for letting her color unsupervised. It kept her busy though! Our last couple days were spent hanging out with Gramma and Grandpa, eating more CafĂ© Rio, and seeing some extended family down in Provo. I love Provo. It must be all the good memories I have of living there, but every time I drive into Provo, I feel like I am home. We also made a trip to the Dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving point with my Aunt and her five kids. It was great because her kids love Jenna and they pretty much followed her around the whole morning so I actually go to relax and read about dinosaurs. It was a very fun and educational experience. Wednesday night I left Jenna with Gramma again and I drove to the airport to pick up my friend who was in my program with me at BYU. We seem to have the same travel schedule and she was in New Hampshire the entire time I was in Utah. She came home the night before I left so I borrowed a car again and drove her to her house in Heber. It was fun drive and we got to chat and catch up. We got to Heber and went out to eat with her husband and had a fun night talking. I made it home by 11 p.m. to find Jenna had woken up. So we hung out together and packed up all our stuff. I mentioned we went shopping and we had quite a few extra things with us. Jenna has a whole new shoe wardrobe and we got about ten pounds worth of baby bows between the two grandmas so we were stuffed to the brim. All in all, it was a most fantastic trip and the only thing that could have made it better was if Jarom was able to join us. But I guess someone has to work to support all of my traveling and playing! It’s a rough life I live, but someone’s gotta do it! Thanks to all grandparents and friends who made the trip super fun!
